Velvet Cobbler Design: Ryan Mercer and Jordi Sabaté

Ryan and Jordi became design partners in 2013. They create designs in their time off.

Jordi’s Engagement Momento

When people are in love, they carve their symbol into a tree. This is an upgraded version with the symbol set into a bridge where Jordi proposed.

The momento was milled from brass using an Othermill, which is a mini CNC mill. I also created a second momento to display in his home.

The Wall Sign, Winter 2015 & Winter 2016

The Wall sign was created by marbling tile with nail polish. Jr. High members of Campus Hill SDA church marbled the tiles, which were later assembled by Ryan and Jordi. A few months later, LED strip lighting was added to the perimeter of the sign.

Hole World Mini

Hold World Mini is a 15" x 7.5" bamboo version of the first Hole World Design. It was created to advertise the large version, but it was also designed to allow for adding LED panels that can display world data like day/night and weather.

Hole World, Summer 2015

Hole World is a 5' x 2.5' wall piece designed by drilling holes in plywood to reveal a world map.

Sabaté Portal

Sabaté Portal is the first successful Velvet Cobbler design. It was estimated to take 3 days max, but actually took 2 weeks of 10 hr days. An optical illusion of a deep tunnel can be seen if the viewer shifts their head from side to side.
